Wikipedia is a free online encyclopaedia, information site created and edited by volunteers around the world and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. It was founded in 2001, and has become one of the world’s most widely and frequently used websites. Wikipedia makes money through donations, investments as well as merchandise sales. It has been stated that in the future, there is a plan to launch an API(application programming interface) that charges a fee to have access to its data.
